Following the ongoing economic hardship on the country, political leaders have been urged to adopt a servant-leader approach to leadership to deliver good governance to the populace.
This was disclosed by the Pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Ahman Pategi University in Kwara State, Professor Mahfouz Adedimeji while speaking on Friday with newsmen after his lecture to celebrate first year anniversary of Professor Olayinka Kareem’s as Vice-Chancrllor of Fountain University in Osogbo, Osun State.
He said the major obstacle to Nigeria progress and development is the issue of genuine leadership who would sacrifice personal interest for national interest.
His words, “Servant leadership is possible and practicable, my thinking is that if it was done before, it can also be done now.It only requires courage, the courage of character, the courage of discipline, the courage to prioritize the needs of Nigerians over and above the needs of who is in power.
“We know President Bola Tinubu is making a lot of efforts in recent times and then just like I mentioned, we know that if anything will be good we have to experience some discomfort in the beginning.
“If everybody that is in position of leadership knows that the first responsibility is to serve others, the person will not even be comfortable sleeping at night when people are hungry. So it’s about selflessness, sacrifice, self control, discipline, empathy and listening to what people have to say.
“We want to appeal to our leaders to put the needs of the people first, it is true that many people are suffering and it can take some symbolic gesture in that regard”.
Earlier in her address, Professor Kareem disclosed that she was motivated to pursue her Vice-Chancellorship ambition because of the influence of the likes of Professor Grace Alele-Williams, who was the first female Vice-Chancellor in the country.
She added that her passion for service was responsible for her achievements within 12 months in office, pledging to do more in a bid make Fountain University a global brand.
